      <image:title>ABOUT</image:title>
<image:caption>Brian Widdis is an editorial photographer living in Detroit and working everywhere. He began his career in 1994, photographing commercial projects in Lansing and Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 2001, he relocated to Detroit, his birthplace, where he continues working on editorial and personal projects. In his project work, he photographs life close to home, exploring the experience of being a dad, husband, son, middle-aged person, and Detroiter. Recent projects include 'The Homefront' (2007 - present), photographing everyday happenings close to home, and 'In Time' (2012-present), photographing the forsythia bushes of early spring. From 2008-2011, Brian also worked on 'Can't Forget the Motor City,' a long-term project looking at Detroit's people and landscapes. His editorial work has appeared in numerous national and international publications. Brian's clients include Le Monde, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, NPR, The Guardian UK, L'OBS, and Le Vif Belgium. Brian lives in Detroit with his wife, Kathy Kieliszewski, and two sons.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Karl Manke, a barber from Owosso, Michigan cuts the hair of Parker Shonts at "Operation Haircut" at the state capitol building in Lansing. The demonstration was organized by Michigan Conservative Coalition to protest Governor Gretchen Whitmer's executive order which closed hair salons in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 virus. Hairstylists and barbers set up chairs on the capitol steps and lawn offering free haircuts to attendees. Though this demonstration was peaceful, recent protests at the capitol featured moments of tension when armed protestors entered the building while lawmakers were in session, causing some elected officials to wear bulletproof vests. Previously empty streets are now bustling with activity. In a majority-black city with a history of racism and segregation, these areas of investment look predominantly young and white, leaving many residents in the city's 200 neighborhoods to ask, "what about us?" <image:caption>Joseph Rivers was stopped by DEA agents on an Amtrak train heading to Los Angeles from Detroit. He was carrying a suitcase filled with $16,000, money he said he had spent months raising to pursue his dream of becoming a musician in LA. Despite explaining this to them, the agents seized his money without charging him, saying they suspected he was using it for illegal activity. Now Mr. Rivers has hired a lawyer and is trying to get his money back from the feds. He said, "At some point, you have to draw a line in the sand. Period." Meanwhile, the forfeiture of his life's savings is the latest case to call into question the controversial practice of asset forfeiture, which allows federal authorities to take money and goods from people whom they suspect are engaged in criminal activity without ever charging them. <image:title>EDITORIAL - DINÉ NATION</image:title>
<image:caption>Kathleen Tsosie of Farmington, New Mexico describes growing up tending sheep with her grandparents and playing in the small desert town of Cove, Arizona. From the 1940s through the 1980s, The Lukachukai and Carrizo Mountains in the Navajo or Diné Nation in northeastern Arizona were the site of dozens of uranium mines. In 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency entered a legal settlement of $1 billion to assess the environmental damage and clean up mines that were operated by Kerr-McGee Corporation and its successor, Tronox. Because of high levels of uranium in the drinking water, wells can no longer be used for households, livestock, or agriculture. The area was connected to municipal water sources 25 years ago. The Diné Nation is a Native American reservation within the United States.</image:caption>
